Glossary

Adhesive types

  1. Solvent: Age resistant (optimal for long ship and storage cycles), easy to use and apply, durable and effective for exterior applications (such as automotive)
  2. Water: Environmentally friendly and water soluble, quickly and easily removed (ideal when climate and environment are not factors)
  3. Adhesiveless: Superior film clarity and aesthetics, low tack for no adhesive transfer or residue (optimal for consumer goods and electronics)
  4. Rubber: High cohesion with little residue glue, high tack for quick bonding, Best suited for textured surfaces (such as wood and carpet)

Protective film

Protective film, surface protection film, protective tape, and masking film are all terms used to describe a temporary layer of protection that can applied and removed easily. It can temporarily protect critical surfaces from marring, scratches, abrasions, dirt, and contamination.

Film thickness

Film thickness is measured in thousands of an inch (mils). It can range from 1 mil to 12 mils thick, with 2-5 mils being the most common. The thickness of the film affects the amount of protection against scratching or abrasions.

Tack (stickiness)

Tack is measured in ounces per inch. Finding the right tack is important and using the incorrect one can cause damage to a surface. The higher the tack, the harder it is to remove from a surface. To see the best results, it is ideal to use the lowest tack that will stay put throughout the entirety of it's life cycle.
